A poignant picture shows Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh recreating the same picture that his father that his father, the late Prince Phillip was photographed in after more than 60 years.

The Royal Prince is visiting the subtropical British overseas territory of St Helena for the first time as part of a foreign tour.

Already, the Duke has paid homage to his mother’s historic visit made all the way back in 1947 after he met the very same tortoise named Jonathan who his late mother met when the animal was 115 years old – now he is aged a remarkable 192.

Prince Edward has become the first member of the Royal Family to visit St Helena since Princess Anne travelled there in 2002.

Now, Edward has mirrored the past by being pictured walking through the same archway to the castle of St. John, Jamestown, that his father did on a tour in 1957 – ten years after the late Queen visited the island.

The picture was shared to social media via X by the Governor of St Helena, Air Commodore Nigel James Phillips.

The picture shows a side-by-side comparison of the two snaps taken of the father and son more than 60 years apart.

Both photos show the royal, both accompanied by another to their left walking through the white archway with cannons stationed on either side of it.

The archway also features the crest of the East India Company which is represented by three lions next to and above the St George’s cross also spells ‘the Latin Auspicio Regis et Senatus Angliae’ which in English translates to ‘Under the auspices of the King and the Parliament of England.’

The Governor wrote: ‘We were honoured to host The Duke of Edinburgh on St Helena this week. The Duke celebrated the very best of our culture and community.

‘I’m thankful to all those who made this possible. [Images below are from 1957 when the late Price Philip visited St Helena].’

The most noticeable difference however is both the royal attire of the current Duke of Edinburgh compared to his late father wearing a white military uniform.

A public holiday has been announced on the island for Wednesday to celebrate the visit by the duke, who is 14th in line to the throne.

On St Helena, Prince Edward will meet community leaders and celebrate the culture, people and biodiversity of the island.

The 59-year-old Royal also became the first royal to arrive on the island by air, as the airport only opened in 2017.

Governor Nigel Phillips said: ‘This promises to be a special occasion, with a public holiday allowing the entire community to join this opportunity to celebrate all that is great about the culture and environment of this remarkable island.’

A trip to St Helena follows a visit to South Africa where Prince Edward might have just expressed what many a woman is currently thinking.

Seemingly referring to global crises including the invasion of Ukraine and the Israeli-Hamas war, the King’s brother voiced the opinion that, perhaps, ‘men aren’t doing a very good job at the moment’.

At just 47 square miles, St Helena is a third of the size of the Isle of Wight, and around the same size as Disney World Orlando. Its nearest landmass is Ascension Island, which is 807 miles to the northwest.

This island with a population of around 4,203 people remains Britain’s second-oldest overseas territory after Bermuda.

Saint Helena is also known for being the site of Napoleon’s second exile, following his final defeat in 1815.
