A man has been hailed a ‘hero’ for getting a vasectomy at age 20 to prevent his ‘super fertile’ wife from getting pregnant again.

Tristan Denholm, from Missouri, was just 18 when he discovered wife Krishna Ruz Gallegos had fallen pregnant ‘unexpectedly’ in January 2021 after only dating for a year.

The now 21-year-old said Krishna had just started taking birth control at the time but the pair didn’t wait the week needed for the medication to work, so she fell pregnant after having unprotected sex.

Tristan said not many people expect to have a child at 18 years old and after their son Kayden Denholm was born in September 2021, he began to think about getting a vasectomy.

The influencer admits there were a range of variables pushing him to get the procedure, but said that his wife being ‘super fertile’ was a key one, as there is a history of unexpected pregnancies in her family.

Another factor was that they are still living in his parent’s basement.

And now four months post-sterilization, the self-employed entrepreneur said getting the surgery was the best decision and feels like a ‘weight has been lifted off his chest.’

The young father said he now hopes that by being sterilized he can give his only son the best childhood and support him financially throughout life.

After sharing his decision on TikTok, he was inundated with comments, with many praising his decision and claiming more men should do it – though some warned it was a drastic step to take when they could just use protection.

A vasectomy, also known as male sterilization, is a surgical procedure to cut or seal the tubes that carry a man’s sperm to permanently prevent pregnancy.

The surgery is usually carried out under local anesthetic when the patient is awake and takes around 15 minutes to complete.

Whilst a vasectomy reversal can be difficult to complete, the success of one depends on how long ago the original sterilization process was completed.

Due to this, Tristan says he wouldn’t recommend the method as a form of contraception to men if there was even a slim chance they wanted more kids.

Tristan said: ‘[Getting a vasectomy at 20] was caused by a mixture of a lot of things.

‘I already had a kid at 18 so there was already that. Most people at 18 aren’t having kids and I want to make sure I can provide for him as best as I can.

‘Right now, he is my main priority. I got a vasectomy as a way to put everything I have into this child to give him the best life I can.

‘When my now wife fell pregnant it was definitely an accident. I don’t think many people are planning to have children at 18 and you just never think it’s going to happen to you.

‘I wasn’t using contraception at the time. My wife was taking birth control [and had just gone on it] and you’re meant to wait a week until you have sex but we had sex within that week.’

He continued: ‘When I had my son there were definitely thoughts about getting a vasectomy but I think the decision became a lot more serious near the end of 2023.

‘[Another reason for getting a vasectomy was that] my wife has two sisters and one of them has four kids and none of the pregnancies were planned.

‘Even her mum had a kid when she was really young and before she was 20 so with all this in mind we [seem] to be at a greater risk for getting pregnant than other people would.

‘There has been a history of lots of unexpected pregnancies.

‘When I live in the US I am also living with my parents in their basement and trying to get ahead financially. Living on our own would be doable but we wouldn’t be able to save any money.

‘My parents are already doing a lot for us and they would be supportive if we did have another kid but just for the current living situation that we are in I think we want to try and keep things as stable as possible and this is the smartest decision.

‘I would say that when you go into a vasectomy, you have to go in thinking the procedure is irreversible, even though there are chances that it can be reversed.

‘That was my mindset anyway. I went into thinking that I would not be able to have another kid.

‘[Due to this] I wouldn’t recommend getting a vasectomy as a form of contraception other than condoms.

‘Some people know that they don’t want to have kids but I think if you even have a thought that you might want kids when you’re older, I wouldn’t recommend this.

‘My situation had a lot of variables that meant a vasectomy was the best for me and it was a very specific situation.’

Tristan and Krishna have now been married for more than two years and said that they do not wish to have any more children as it would not be financially viable.

He said before going through with a vasectomy Tristan thought about the long-term impacts of the procedure and spoke to his wife and parents thoroughly about his decision.

And on the day of his sterilization, Krishna had to sign a consent form to say she was happy for him to go under the knife.

Tristan said: ‘I had been thinking about it for months and I spoke to my wife and parents about it to get their opinions.

‘Some people said I was stupid to go through with it but others understood my points and I ended up getting the procedure done on September 11, 2023.

‘When I told my wife about wanting to get a vasectomy, we had multiple conversations about this and came to an agreement about it.

‘After talking, it wasn’t realistic for us to have another kid, at least within the next four or five years.

‘I know your life is unpredictable but it didn’t make sense for us financially to have another kid and seemed like the right decision for us, given that we are living with my parents and I already have a kid at 21 years old.

‘It was a pretty simple surgery. I was awake the whole time and my wife was in the room.

‘If you’re married, in my state, my wife had to sign to give consent to the procedure.

‘The first week of recovering was the hardest and I sometimes still get a pain in my groin.

‘I looked this up and apparently only about one in 10 people get this but after the first week I was pretty recovered from the surgery.

‘For me it was worth it and I feel like there is a weight lifted off my chest and I don’t use contraception anymore.’

Tristan said: ‘I think in my TikTok, you only have 30 seconds to a minute and you have to make it entertaining so my decision may have seemed impulsive [in the video].

‘But I really did spend a lot of time mulling it over with people and I really felt secure in my decision.

‘I got a lot of comments on the video of girls saying how they wanted to get their tubes tied at a young age after having one or two kids and the doctors not letting them which I think is very sexist.

‘There were guys who also commented on the video that they also had a vasectomy and it was a great decision.’

One user said: ‘More men should do this.’

A third commented: ‘Good for you dude. Way to take responsibility.’

And another declared: ‘You’re my hero. ‘
