An Italian travel influencer who was on a honeymoon is accused of causing the horror crash that killed an elderly couple and their daughter.

Gabriele Cairo, 28, faced Adelaide Magistrates Court for the first time on Wednesday, charged with two counts each of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury.

The court heard he crashed his hired campervan into a Honda Civic at the intersection of Templeton Road and Blyth Road in Adelaide’s Everard Central, on October 31, last year.

Cynthia Clark, 84, and her daughter Jaqueline Clark, 54, were travelling in the Honda and both died at the scene, while John Clark, 86, was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he died almost a week later.

Cairo and his wife Elena Perrone, 26, who are avid travellers were in South for their dream honeymoon.

The newly wed couple run a YouTube Channel known as ‘Hakuna Matata Viaggi’ and have posted vlogs of their visits to several places including LA, Egypt, and Hawaii.

The pair are seen in several videos visiting tourist hotspots such as Hollywood and the Pyramids of Giza and having food at popular bars and restaurants.

Ms Perrone, who was inside the van driven by Cairo, also suffered critical injuries in the crash but survived.

Cairo‘s lawyer Hugh Woods asked Magistrate Justin Wickens to have his client’s case adjourned and said Cairo doesn’t speak English very well.

‘These charges are major indictable and will need to be referred to the District Court,’ Mr Woods said.

‘My client resides in Italy and is currently here on a tourist visa … we’ll require an interpreter on the next occasion.’

The three victims were farewelled by hundreds of mourners at a funeral in November last year with Mr Clark and his wife and daughter remembered as much loved members of Adelaide’s mid north community.

Cairo was remanded on bail and is set to face court again in March.
