A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck Los Angeles on New Year’s Day.
In a rude awakening for revelers nursing hangovers, the quake struck 12 miles off the coast from the city of Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles County at 8.27am.
The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 but that was later revised down to 4.1 by the US Geological Survey.
Shaking from the tremor, which had a depth of seven miles, was felt across the county. Residents as far flung as Santa Clarita, San Bernardino, Temecula, Mission Viejo and Catalina Island reported shaking.
It comes after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan – that seismic activity was 100,000 times greater than the 4.1-quake off LA.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage in California.
The offshore tremor was ‘way too small to even talk about tsunamis,’ seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said on X.
In the last ten days, there has been at least one earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
There are five earthquakes on average every year in the greater LA region with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0.
