A ‘despicable’ driver has been called out following shocking footage that captured his dog being dragged along the road after falling out of his car window.

The footage, which was shared to Dash Cam Owners Australia last week, shows the man driving a white hatchback around a winding road.

His pet dog had fallen out of the car window and was shockingly seen being dragged along the road by its leash which was caught inside the car.

A passing motorcyclist waved down the car which then came to a sudden stop, only for the driver to then carelessly then throw his pet back inside through the window.

Many have since condemned the driver for his careless actions and stressed the need for dogs to be harnessed when riding in cars.

‘I despise anyone who lets their dog freely roam about the vehicle. Accidents only happen when they aren’t restrained,’ one commented.

‘That was the most horrific thing I’ve seen, all dogs should be held in a harness,’ said another.

‘He didn’t even check the dog out for injury, just threw him in the car. What a despicable creature of a dog owner. The dog deserves much more,’ one viewer wrote.

‘How long was that poor pup dragged before the motorcyclist intervened?’ one person commented.

Road rules surrounding having pets in cars vary across each state.

In NSW and Victoria there are no specific rules about having animals restrained in cars but they are not allowed to be on the driver’s lap.

Meanwhile in Queensland, the law states animals must be safely secured while driving. Drivers can be hit with a maximum $9,288 fine if they’re found to be driving with animals in an unsafe manner.
