James McCaffrey, an American actor best known for voicing the video game character Max Payne, has died, per TMZ sources.

He passed at the age of 65 on Sunday after a battle with cancer, according to the news source.

The star was reportedly diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

‘One of Dick Wolf’s proteges (Swift Justice), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film,’ a rep told TMZ. ‘Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles.’

Actor Kevin Dillon took to his Instagram to pay his respects, writing, ‘James McCaffrey we were lucky to have known you. my best friend you will be missed.’

McCaffrey gained recognition for his versatile performances across various media, but his significant impact lies in the realm of video games. 

He is widely celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Max Payne, the titular character in the acclaimed video game series. 

His gritty and emotional delivery brought Max Payne to life, earning him praise for capturing the character’s noir sensibilities. 

Apart from Max Payne, McCaffrey has lent his voice to numerous other video game characters, showcasing his ability to convey depth and authenticity in virtual storytelling. 

As for television, he appeared in the comedy Rescue Me, where he portrayed Jimmy Keefe for 56 episodes between 2004 and 2011.

Viper was another big show for the actor, where he one was one of the leads fighting crime with the help of a Dodge Viper RT/10 roadster.

The show ran from 1994 to 1999.  

He also appeared in Suits, Blue Bloods, Jessica Jones, As the World Turns and many more.

On the big screen, his dashing good looks were part of The Truth About Cats & Dogs, The Big Take, A Gifted Man, and American Splendor, among others.

He was also a producer for such projects as 2015’s Beyond Repair. 

The actor is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom and daughter Tiernan.
