He has also appeared on Grace as Luke Jones, but viewers may recognise him from his role as Tommy Wilson in the ITV period drama Grantchester.

The actor has already began filming, and he said he was ‘delighted’ to join the cast of such an ‘iconic’ programme after watching EastEnders growing up.

‘Johnny is a complex character who has been through so much, which I can’t wait to explore,’ he said.

‘I’ve found EastEnders to be the most kind and loving space to work in, and I already feel like one of the family.

EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw said he was ‘delighted’ for Charlie to come on board – as he remarked Johnny’s remains are still ‘linked to the show’ as well to the iconic venue, The Queen Vic.

He said: ‘Since his short time away, the Carter family dynamics have changed significantly, and it’s safe to say that Johnny will be returning to a very different Walford than the one he left.’

Johnny’s firstly appeared in December 2013 alongside mum Linda (Kellie Bright) and dad Mick (Danny Dyer).

The character is remember as one of the soap’s favourites, and was firstly played by Sam Strike.
