A 10-month-old baby boy has died after being rushed to hospital with critical injuries following an alleged assault in Tasmania’s south.

The infant was taken by ambulance from a home in Warrane, on Hobart’s eastern shore, to Royal Hobart Hospital during the early hours of December 1.

Daniel John Ridgers, 25, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to the child by allegedly shaking him and dropping him into a cot.

Tasmania Police on Monday issued a statement saying the little boy had died.

‘Our condolences are with the family and loved ones of the baby,’ a statement said.

‘The police investigation is ongoing.’

On Saturday, detectives said they believed the infant was injured in a ‘serious assault’ but warned the investigation is expected to take ‘some time’.

‘Police were called to the Royal Hobart Hospital around 5:20am … after a child presented with critical injuries that are believed to be suspicious,’ police said.

Ridgers did not enter a plea or apply for bail during the out-of-hours hearing in Hobart’s Magistrate Court and was remanded in custody.

He is scheduled to next appear in court on Monday, December 4.

Anyone with information that may help the investigation is asked to call Bellerive CIB on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers.
