A baby’s body has been discovered inside a wheelie bin outside a home, prompting police to open a investigation.
Emergency services were called to a home on Renall Street in Freeman’s Bay, Auckland, about 10pm on Tuesday.
It’s understood police found the newborn baby in a bin outside the address.
A woman has been taken custody and is assisting police with their inquiries.
‘This is a tragedy for everyone concerned and there is a person’s wellbeing to consider here alongside the investigation, so we will ensure the woman gets the support she needs,’ Auckland City CIB detective inspector Scott Beard said.
‘Police acknowledge this will understandably be quite confronting information for the community to grapple with.’
Mr Beard said a post-mortem would be conducted to inform the next stages of the investigation and asked the public to avoid speculation.
The street remained cordoned off on Wednesday.
More to come.
