A poll taken in the immediate aftermath of Donald Trump’s decision to unleash ‘bunker buster’ bombs on Iran’s nuclear facilities reveals how Americans feel about the attack.

The CNN / SSRS poll shows a substantial 56 percent majority disapproves of the attack.

Just 44 percent approve of the move, according to the poll taken in the two days after Trump’s surprise decision to order the U.S. military to get involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

The totals have 20 percent strongly approving and 24 percent ‘somewhat’ approving of the US decision to take military action. Among those against it, 24 percent somewhat disapprove and 32 percent strongly disapprove.

An overwhelming 58 percent majority think the military action will make Iran more of a threat to the US, compared to 27 percent who said less and 15 percent who said neither.

That came as Iran was threatening to hit back, and the Islamic Republic did indeed fire missiles at a US base in Qatar, resulting in no casualties, according to the military, and after Trump said Iran provided advance warning.

There were also no US casualties during the air campaign itself, although analysts have warned of the risks of attacks by Iranian proxies.

The poll numbers reveal the potential risks of an ongoing conflict – although Trump dramatically announced a ceasefire Monday night, and told reporters Tuesday that it was holding after dressing down Israel and calling for the US ally to have its planes ‘turn around and head home.’

Trump has also lavished praise on the U.S. B-2 bomber pilots who flew their stealth aircraft from Missouri across the Atlantic to drop the bunker busters on Iran’s nuclear facilities. It is still to be seen just how much damage the bombs caused, and whether Iran was able to spirit away a substantial amount of its enriched nuclear material.

Asked if the US made enough of an effort at diplomacy before using force, 32 percent said it did enough, with 39 percent saying it did not do enough, and 29 percent who weren’t sure.

It is unclear how much views on Trump are baked in to the result. The same poll had 45 percent saying they trust Trump to make the right decision on the use of force, compared to 55 percent who don’t.

With a coming debate on a congressional War Powers resolution, 65 percent said Trump should be required to get congressional approval for further military action in Iran.

There are pronounced partisan differences. Democrats disapprove of the strikes, 88 to 12. Republicans approve by 82 to 18 percent. Independents are split, with 60 percent disapproval and 40 percent approval.
