Americans gathered to pay their respects to Rosalynn Carter as her body lied in repose at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia on Monday.

The former first lady passed November 19 at the age of 96 at her home in Plains, Georgia alongside her husband of 77 years, President Jimmy Carter, 99.

Family members and current and former U.S. Secret Service assigned to Rosalynn’s detail came together Monday morning as her casket departed Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia following a wreath-laying ceremony.

The Secret Service agents carried her casket and walked alongside the hearse motorcade carrying her body as it departed the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex at Georgia Southwestern State University en route to Atlanta.

In Georgia’s capital Monday afternoon, each branch of the military was represented as service members carried Rosalynn’s casket upon arriving at her husband’s presidential library and museum.

Members of the Carter family, including Jimmy and Rosalynn’s daughter Amy and son James ‘Chip,’ paused by the statue of their mother at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center during the wreath laying ceremony on Monday morning.

Jimmy Carter was not spotted in the motorcade and the former president was not seen in the crowd among family members in Atlanta.

The repose for Rosalynn Carter follows the wreath laying ceremony – and gave members of the public an opportunity to view the casket and pay their respects to the late first lady.

On Tuesday there is a scheduled tribute church service for invited guests only.

And on Wednesday, Carter’s funeral will be held at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains followed by an internment at the family’s Georgia residence.

Rosalynn’s death came days after she entered at-home hospice care and months after her family disclosed in May that she had dementia.

The Carter Center announced in February that former president Carter entered hospice care at home after deciding to decline additional medical intervention.
