A motorcycle rider has been rushed to hospital in a critical conditon after he struck a pole in Sydney’s southwest.

The tragic accident occured on the Orange Grove Road in Liverpool at around 9:30pm on Thursday night.

Daily Mail understands the young man may have turned his head to look at friends behind him who were flashing their headlights from a car behind him.

He reportedly struck a pole and was thrown from the motorcycle. 

The rider, an 18-year-old man, was treated by NSW Ambulance for a serious leg injury before being taken to hospital for further treatment, NSW Police said.

The motorbike rider has reportedly had one leg amputated and suffered a compound fracture to the other. 

The motorbike rider’s friends were pictured looking distraught, as emergency services attended the scene. 

The northbound lanes of Cumberland Highway were closed for several hours while crash investigators examined the scene. 

An investigation has commenced into the circumstances of the crash.
