Reform sensationally seized Runcorn and Helsby from Labour by just six votes, in the narrowest by-election win in modern British history.
Nigel Farage’s party is also expected to gain hundreds of councillors across England, with both the Tories and Labour braced for a battering.
Polls were held in 23 areas across England to elect more than 1,600 new councillors, while six mayoral contests also took place.
Only a handful of results have been declared.
Runcorn and Helsby was the only constituency selecting a new MP.
The by-election was triggered because Labour’s Mike Amesbury resigned after being convicted of assaulting a constituent on a night out.
