Locals have been left terrified after bags of gravel containing human remains were discovered near a children’s playground.

The grisly discovery was made in a garden only a stone’s throw away from a children’s park in Lewisham, South East London last Sunday on April 17.

Police officers raced to the scene after residents found a jaw as well as pieces of a bone from an arm as a community led project cleaned the area.

Participants of the Church Grove Project, run by Rural Urban Synthesis Society, had been constructing a play area, when someone spotted a jaw tumble out of a gravel bag.

The Metropolitan Police have since been combing the area to find potential evidence of any other remains.

The force have since confirmed that no arrests have been made and that the human body parts were ‘non-recent’, as they launch a probe to identify the remains.

Locals were shaken to the core by the find with parents worried about their children’s safety.

One mother confessed her disbelief, saying how ‘tiny kids were playing right next to literal bits of human arm.’

She revealed how she never expected to see such an incident happen so close to your own doorstep, adding that the community has been left ‘extremely shaken’.

She told The Sun: ‘I’ve literally just had a baby, it’s absolutely terrifying, we moved her to be safe we just don’t know what to do’

Her husband also told of his shock branding the incident in their ‘wholesome’ area of the city as ‘mind-boggling’.

‘We all pitch in and grow our vegetables in the shared eco garden, it’s just mind-boggling, completely shocking,’ he added.

A Metropolitan spokesperson said: ‘On Saturday, 12 April police were called at 14:08hrs to Church Grove, SE13 following reports that human remains had been unearthed in a garden.

‘There have been no arrests at this stage and officers are working to establish an identity, although the remains are thought to be non-recent.

‘Enquiries are ongoing and a crime scene remains in place.
