A man who raped a woman in a park and filmed the attack before sending clips of it to other people has been jailed after attempting to tell a court his victim had raped him.

Gagandeep Gulati, 20, found his victim alone in Leicester’s Jubilee Square in September last year before coercing her into Castle Gardens park, a secluded area in the town.

Once there, he sexually assaulted and raped the young woman while filming the attack on his phone. He then sent footage of his crime to others.

The victim reported the attack to police and detectives used CCTV footage to trace her path, eventually tracing Gulati’s movements too.

The case was investigated by Leicestershire Police’s Signal team, which specialises in rape and serious sexual violence cases.

When Detective Constable Matt Smith visited the accommodation where Gulati was staying to carry out further enquiries, police say he immediately recognised him from the footage and arrested him.

Gulati, who is originally from Leicester, was charged with one count of rape, one count of assault by penetration, one count of sexual assault and one count of sharing an intimate film.

In interview, Gulati tried to claim that he had been sexually assaulted by the victim and that she was the one who raped him.

He continued his lies in the witness stand, but was convicted of all charges at Leicester Crown Court.

On Friday Gulati  was jailed for six years and placed on the sex offender register for life.

DC Smith said: ‘Even during cross examination Gulati tried to claim that the victim had instigated the sexual activity and tried to blame her for the offence.

‘He’s shown no remorse for his actions, which was to deliberately target a young woman while she was alone for his own sexual gratification.

‘The victim has shown immense bravery by reliving her ordeal through the trial.’

Leicestershire Police said that anyone in the county who has been a victim of sexual assault can contact Juniper Lodge – a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) – by phoning 0116 273 3330.
