He shot to prominence in the late 80s as a producer making a hit from the quirky comedy Young Einstein starring an unknown actor from Newcastle called Yahoo Serious – real name Greg Pead.

Originally shot on a low budget the film took years to complete, with many sequences re-done and added to the final version which debuted in 1988.

The film went on to earn $24 million globally.

Ross teamed with Serious over the next decade to make the Ned Kelly send-up Reckless Kelly (1993).

That was followed up with another Serious film, Mr. Accident (2000) which wasn’t quite as successful.

Ross won acclaim in 2013 with Red Obsession, a documentary that combined his talents as a filmmaker and his interest in wine.

Narrated by Russell Crowe the gorgeous looking movie was about Chinese entrepreneurs disrupting the traditional world of wine making in the vineyards of France.

Co-written and directed by his long-term filmmaking partner David Roach won an ACCTA award for best documentary film and best direction.
