Residents have been warned to keep their windows and doors closed as firefighters rush to tackle a ‘large blaze’ in a building.

The fire, which is believed to have broken out at the abandoned Nations Club in Plymouth, could be seen from miles away as thick black smoke rose into the sky.

A video posted on X showed bright orange flames raging out of a window on the second floor of the complex, as firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze.

Authorities confirmed that five fire engines and five police cars were sent to the scene to assist.

While traffic was diverted around the area and motorists were told to avoid the surrounding roads.

Nobody is believed to have been injured at this stage.

A spokesperson said cylinders were involved which was ‘making it more difficult’ to control.

Fire services said they were called to a building next to KFC at about 4.30pm where the first and second floor of the property was on fire.

There was a ‘large amount of smoke coming from the roof’ and firefighters said they would be there for some time.

The cause of the huge fire is not currently known.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue posted on X: ‘Fire crews are tackling a large fire at a commercial building in Union Street, Plymouth.

‘Please keep your windows and doors closed and avoid the area if you live nearby as there is a lot of smoke coming from the building.’
