The driver of a stolen BMW allegedly smashed into a cop car and tore bollards out of the concrete after Melbourne police spotted him parked outside a 7-Eleven.

Officers noticed the number plates of the allegedly stolen car as it sat outside the service station on Toorak Road, in Hawthorn East, at about 12.30am on Wednesday.

When the 43-year-old driver saw the approaching police patrol, he jumped back behind the wheel of the white BMW and attempted to flee the scene with his female passenger.

The BMW came to a halt wedged between a bollard and the store front after reversing directly into the patrol car, Victoria Police said.

‘Police parked behind the car, in an attempt to stop it leaving, when it’s alleged the driver reversed the BMW, ramming the police vehicle several times,’ a spokesperson said.

‘Police pushed the BMW forward to stop any further incidents.’

The store front, the BMW and the police car were all damaged as a result of the ramming, with four bollards also ripped out and a metal bin destroyed.

A quick-thinking shop attendant told 7NEWS he turned off the fuel pumps as he was worried the driver would crash into one.

The driver, from Langwarrin, and his passenger, a 31-year-old woman from Doveton, were arrested and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The pair have not yet been charged by Victoria Police but are expected to be interviewed by officers when they are discharged from hospital later on Wednesday.

Officers involved in the incident were not injured.

Victoria Police are appealing for any witnesses or people with footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
