A young motorcyclist has been killed in a police pursuit.

New South Wales Police launched a critical incident investigation following the fatal crash in Sydney’s west about 2.30pm on Monday.

Police claim an officer from its Traffic and Highway Patrol unit attempted to stop a motorcycle on Arthur Street in Strathfield.

However, the driver failed to stop so police began pursuing the vehicle.

In the first few minutes of the chase, the motorcycle driver – a man believed to be aged in his 20’s – clipped the side of a Toyota Corolla while trying to overtake it.

The smash caused him to lose control of his bike and he crashed into a power pole in front of a childcare centre.

‘Officers treated the male rider – believed to be aged in his 20’s – until the arrival of paramedics. However, he died at the scene,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

The man will not be formally identified until his next of kin have been notified of the incident.

Officers established a crime scene with Arthur Street closed in both directions between Henley Street and Hornsey Road.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

A Critical Incident Investigation Team from Bankstown Police Area Command will analyse the crash and its findings will be subject to an independent review.

Anyone with information or dashcam vision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The news comes just three days after another motorcyclist crashed during a pursuit with Sydney police.

Officers had attempted to stop the driver on Camden Valley Way in Gregory Hills, in the city’s south-west, about 12.45pm but he failed to stop.
