Texas A&M have fired Jimbo Fisher, according to multiple reports on Sunday morning, with the head coach getting a huge $75million payout.

The news emerges less than 24 hours after the 51-10 win over Mississippi State on Saturday, taking their record for the season to 6-4 and making them bowl eligible.

But it clearly was not enough to silence the doubts around Fisher.

According to Yahoo Sports the groundwork for Fisher’s dismissal was put in place on Thursday after a four hour meeting and ESPN said he was told of his fate on Sunday morning. His buyout stands at around $75m with eight years remaining on his contract.

Furthermore, defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson will step up to replace him for the rest of the season.

The 58-year-old signed a 10-year contract that is fully guaranteed and is reportedly paid around $9m a year.

Since taking over in 2018, Fisher’s record stands at 45-25 at the school.

Fisher arrived at Texas from Florida State and had won a nation title there back in 2013.

Texas has two games remaining in the season against Abilene Christian and LSU.

Speaking after the Mississippi win, Fisher had no idea that his firing was coming and said that the vibe in his team was ‘tremendous’.

He added: ‘They keep playing, being resilient and coming back and get better. They are high quality character kids.

‘Hopefully we’ll play another great next week and another great game in the last week.’
