A driver has been arrested in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton after a police chase across several suburbs.

Police began their chase in South Yarra and chased the driver to North Road in Brighton, roughly 9km north, at 7:30am on Thursday.

The man, 24, was found hiding out in an apartment complex on New Street.

A massive police presence conducted a manhunt to find him and many officers remain on the scene.

Officers say the man behind the wheel was planning on mowing down pedestrians.

Victorian police have closed down New Street remains closed in both directions between North Road and Martin Street and have told drivers to avoid the area until further notice 

It is believed that the man smashed into a parked car and two police vehicles as he attempted to evade their pursuit.

His Holden Colorado ute was seen with damage to its driver’s-side door and a Mazda 3 was seen on the roadside with damage to its front.

Police confirmed that they had caught him by 9am.

‘Officers attempted to intercept the Holden. The vehicle took off, driving erratically on footpaths and into oncoming traffic,’ a statement from Victoria Police read. 

New Street remains closed in both directions between North Road and Martin Street as officers investigate the scene.

Several police cars and an ambulance are now on the scene and motorists have been told to avoid the area until further notice.
